John Northington Jr. is a government affairs advisor and a member of the Public Policy and Law practice group.
John has more than a decade of public and private sector energy policy and regulatory experience. He specializes in upstream, midstream, and renewable issues including traditional oil and gas, offshore wind, carbon capture and sequestration, and hydrogen projects. From the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska, he has worked on complex matters on federal, tribal, and state lands and waters.
John concentrates on federal regulatory and policy affairs both in the Executive and Legislative branches with a particular focus on energy issues within the Department of the Interior (DOI), Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, and House and Senate Committees with jurisdiction and oversight of traditional and renewable energy and natural resources related activity.
Having been involved in politics for more than 15 years he has substantial experience with local, state, and federal political campaigns. He previously served as Advisor to the Director at the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), US DOI.
He regularly engages on issues related to the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA), the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA), Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), and any regulation covering the exploration and production of natural resources both onshore and offshore. John has helped clients navigate complex legislative matters as well, most recently as it pertains to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
A seventh-generation Texan, John is an avid sportsman and land conservationist who spends his free time at his family’s ranch in Brazoria County, Texas. He received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Coastal Carolina University
