An Introduction to Insurance Products for Asset Managers
This is the second installment in a continuing series of webinars on the opportunities presented for asset managers and institutional investors from the intersection of asset management and insurance. In this session, we will take a detailed look at both registered and private insurance products.
First, we will cover publicly offered variable annuities and other products registered under the Investment Company Act. Areas of attention include:
- The relationship between the insurance products offered and the investment elections for registered funds included in those products;
- The registration process for the registered funds (which will be of particular interest to private fund sponsors not currently managing registered funds)
- Insurance company "platforms" for registered funds to be included in insurance products
Then, we turn to private IDFs, and cover:
- The design of private IDFs for inclusion in institutional and high net worth portfolios;
- The application of the tax rules regarding diversification to portfolio construction, including the ramp-up and wind-down periods
- The interplay between the "investor control doctrine" and typical tax indemnities
- IDF platforms versus stand-alone IDFs
- Compliance implications for private IDF sponsors
